Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts Launches Independent Demonstration of Microvi Denitrovi™ for Advanced Nitrogen Reduction at Albert Kendall Warren Water Resource Facility
California’s largest public utility, serving 5.5 million people, independently evaluates Microvi’s biological denitrification biosolution at the 400 MGD Warren Facility — a project with the potential to prevent thousands of pounds of inorganic nitrogen from entering Southern California’s coastal waters
HAYWARD, CA (July 17, 2025) – Microvi Biotech Inc. today announced that the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (LACSD) — California’s largest public utility — has officially launched an independent, fully funded demonstration of Microvi’s Denitrovi™ biosolution for partial denitrification in wastewater. The demonstration is underway at LACSD’s Albert Kendall Warren Water Resource Facility and will support long-term scientific study of biological nitrogen removal as part of LACSD’s commitment to reducing the discharge of inorganic nitrogen into the environment.
LACSD is a consortium of 24 independent special districts serving approximately 5.5 million people across 78 cities and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. The 400 MGD Warren Water Resource Facility is one of the largest municipal wastewater treatment plants in Southern California, and the scale of this demonstration reflects the significance LACSD places on finding cost-effective biological solutions to nitrogen reduction challenges.
Microvi’s Denitrovi™ technology converts nitrogen compounds directly into harmless nitrogen gas through a proprietary biological process, producing no secondary waste stream or chemical byproducts. The system’s compact, modular design, low energy requirements, and near-zero sludge generation make it a compelling alternative to conventional nitrogen removal methods such as ion exchange or chemical denitrification — approaches that generate costly waste streams and require significant infrastructure investment.
The environmental stakes at the Warren Facility are substantial. If fully implemented at its 400 MGD capacity, Denitrovi™ has the potential to prevent thousands of pounds of inorganic nitrogen per day from entering Southern California’s coastal waters — helping protect sensitive marine ecosystems, public beaches, and local communities that depend on a healthy coastal environment. Nitrogen over-enrichment of coastal waters is a leading driver of algae blooms, hypoxic zones, and ecosystem degradation in Southern California and globally.
“LACSD’s decision to independently evaluate Denitrovi™ is a testament to the strength of the underlying science and the real-world performance data our technology has demonstrated. We are proud to support LACSD’s mission to protect Southern California’s environment and look forward to the outcomes of this critical project.”
— Dr. Fatemeh Shirazi, CEO, Microvi Biotech Inc.
The demonstration is being conducted in close collaboration with LACSD’s technical team, led by Bruce Mansell, PhD, PE. Microvi looks forward to sharing results as the study progresses and to advancing the reach of MicroNiche Engineering™ biosolutions in addressing critical environmental challenges across Southern California and beyond.

About the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (LACSD)
The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (LACSD) are a public agency focused on converting waste into valuable resources — including recycled water, energy, and recycled materials. The agency consists of 24 independent special districts serving approximately 5.5 million people across 78 cities and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County, spanning roughly 850 square miles. To maximize efficiency and reduce costs, the 24 Districts operate cooperatively under a single administrative staff headquartered near the City of Whittier. Learn more at www.lacsd.org.
