Microvi MNE™ Achieves Breakthrough Results in 2.5-Year Full-Scale Demonstration of Low-Carbon Nitrogen Removal and Carbon Diversion
California Energy Commission-funded project at Linda County Water District delivers total nitrogen below 8 mg-N/L with no chemical addition, ultra-compact footprint, and near-zero solids — the first full-scale integration of advanced primary and nitrogen removal in a holistic system
HAYWARD, CA (June 9, 2025) – Microvi Biotech Inc., Caliskaner Water Technologies, Inc. (CWT), and Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc. today unveiled the results of 2.5 years of full-scale demonstration of next-generation nutrient removal and carbon diversion at Linda County Water District’s Wastewater Treatment Plant in Olivehurst, California. The project, funded by a $6.5 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) under award EPC-20-044, represents the first full-scale integration of advanced primary and nitrogen removal technologies operating together as a holistic treatment system.
Over the course of the demonstration, Microvi’s MNE™ Total Nitrogen system delivered consistent high-level nitrogen and carbon removal — achieving total nitrogen in effluent below 8 mg-N/L through full nitrification and denitrification, with no chemical addition, ultra-low solids generation, and no secondary waste stream. The system operates within an ultra-compact footprint and is designed for straightforward retrofit into existing wastewater infrastructure — making next-generation performance accessible at real-world scale.
The project showcases a rare convergence of breakthrough wastewater technologies operating side by side — including Microvi’s MNE™ Total Nitrogen process, cloth pile filtration, AGS, MABR, and MLE systems — providing an industry-first reference site for evaluating real-world performance of next-generation treatment solutions. In a further demonstration of system performance, a second cloth pile filter has been deployed to replace the traditional clarifier, boosting overall throughput. Aqua-Aerobic Systems contributed its advanced cloth media filtration technology as a key integration component throughout the demonstration.
Beyond nitrogen removal, Microvi’s MNE™ platform demonstrated additional environmental co-benefits critical to the future of wastewater treatment: measurable nitrous oxide (N₂O) reduction, bio-struvite production for beneficial nutrient recovery, and low-carbon operation enabled by minimal aeration requirements. These attributes position the Microvi MNE™ process as a direct response to both today’s tightening effluent standards and tomorrow’s emerging requirements for greenhouse gas reduction at treatment facilities.
The project results have already received international recognition: findings were presented at the European Wastewater Management Conference and Exhibition in Manchester, UK, exposing the global wastewater community to this first-of-its-kind system integration. The demonstration site at Linda County Water District has served as a live technology showcase, hosting an exclusive presentation and facility tour for wastewater engineers, utility managers, and regulators to observe full-scale performance firsthand.
