Microvi Wins Major Funding from Ofwat to Amplify the Scale and Impact of its Biological Solutions for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Microvi announced today that Ofwat, the water regulator in England and Wales, has selected Microvi’s MNE technology as a winner in its Water Breakthrough Challenge. In collaboration with Severn Trent and Cranfield University, the award of £762,447 ($1,005,736) will focus on using Microvi’s MNE platform to remove ammonia from wastewater without the formation of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas.

The project, called “Catalysing a NET-ZERO Future,” will bring together cross-disciplinary partners for the benefit of water quality and climate change. Nitrous oxide is 300 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide and is emitted by microorganisms in conventional wastewater treatment systems. This project will utilize the MNE platform with specifically targeted microbes capable of avoiding nitrous oxide formation while intensifying the nitrification process.

“We are delighted to be selected for this important and timely award with our collaboration partners, said Dr. Fatemeh Shirazi, CEO of Microvi. “As the climate crisis intensifies, the demand for sustainable solutions has risen quickly. We are driven to bring scalable, impactful solutions that not only preserve the environment but are advantageous to industry..”

In addition to its previous work on phosphorus removal with Severn Trent and Cranfield University, Microvi has also demonstrated the benefits of MNE for ammonia and nitrate removal from wastewater at Wessex Water and MNE for activated sludge intensification at Scottish Water. Microvi recently celebrated the grand opening of its first full-scale sidestream ammonia removal plant in San Lorenzo, California.
